Who Shut Down the Grand Canyon?
Who shut down the Grand Canyon? Who closed the White House to the public? Who is blocking WWII veterans from viewing their monument? Charles Krauthammer has an excellent opinion piece in the Washington Post today entitled Who Shut Down Yellowstone?
He gives an insightful explanation of three concerns surrounding the Obamacare/shutdown battle: the substance of the fight, the identity of the perpetrators, and the origins of the conflict. I was struck by several statements made by Krauthammer, as he elaborated on each of these points:
Never in the modern history of the country has major social legislation been enacted on a straight party-line vote. Never. (That last one word sentence, NEVER, is significant, and so easily over-looked by the Democrats.)
The Democrats insist they welcomed contributing ideas from Republicans. Rubbish. Republicans proposed that insurance be purchasable across state lines. They got nothing. They sought serious tort reform. They got nothing. Why? (Because that's the way Obama wanted it three years ago, and that's the way he wants it now. He will negotiate with Syria, Iran, and Russia, but NOT with Americans who do not fully support his agenda.)
The reason [for keeping the government shut-down] is obvious: to prolong the pain. (I believe this strategy is a result of President Obama's pettiness, immaturity, and spitefulness.)
The GOP governors of South Dakota and Arizona have both volunteered to use state funds to keep Mt. Rushmore and the Grand Canyon open in their respective states. These requests have been denied. Read the Krauthammer piece. Then answer for yourself, Who shut down Yellowstone?
